With the load of free mulch I had delivered I was able to mulch much of the north facing backyard too, which was also a sandpit.

I bought three black hens (Astralorps) and a beautiful corrugated iron raised garden bed, for growing herbs or whatever I like. I found it at an amazing garden produce nursery situated on the Northern Beaches, New Leaf Nursery, that have an incredible range of cool garden and backyard pet supplies, including ducks, edible plants and cob ovens! Such an inspiring shop!

I'm letting the chickens free range for now, because I've found so many red backs in the backyard, and I've heard that chickens are great for eating them without getting poisoned. They'll do the whole backyard a service by cleaning it up a lot until they get too messy and I decide it's time to fence them in. They'll also add some much needed manure to the impoverished soil.

Since my last gardening efforts I've become more and more inspired by native gardeners and am going to look at how to bring more natives into the garden, and take care of the ones already here.
