composts and worm farms

Can-O-Worms

I've been focusing on building up rich matter to feed the garden and have the tumbler compost in action and a Can-O-Worms worm farm. These are two of my main sources of nutrients for the garden. I always ensure there are some worms left in the bottom of the tumbler when I empty it and keep it stocked with food scrapes, weeds, seaweed, chicken manure, straw and garden debris as well as newspaper and a regular dousing with the hose. It generally takes around six months before the ingredients I mix in are broken down sufficiently for the garden. The trays in the worm farm I keep rotating and fill the top one with wet newspaper, food scrapes, coconut husks and small handfuls of  soil and mulch. They are both working really well.

Juicing scraps: great for the compost.

I am also working on building up a compost heap from larger cuttings and sticks from the garden, which will eventually break down and become another source of fuel for the composts.
