seeds with love
15 SEPTEMBER, 2013
The weather is warm enough to plant seeds I've been saving up and some gorgeous new ones I just received from Green Harvest. I am particularly looking forward to eating homegrown carrots again. They grew very well last year by initially covering the tiny seeds with a damp hessian cloth and waiting until tiny green shoots appeared before removing it to allow them to shoot up.
Sometimes I feel like combining all the seeds in a bowl and spreading them evenly through the spare patches of dirt that I have spread with fresh compost and letting what ever grows, Grow. Lazy or wise? In the past I have spent so long planning where everything will go to find that some plants don't like where I've put them, while others accidentally spring up and flourish where they are happiest.
I'm sowing the green manures to help rebuild the sandy soil, but I did want some more veggies to be growing out the front in the meantime... but I haven't really gone crazy with veggie seeds. Instead I thought to sow flowers amongst the green manures to hopefully attract more bees into the garden, as I am waiting for a swarm to move into my Warre Beehive.
Last year I did manage to find a swarm in the neighbourhood, which I brought home in a cardboard box (a la The Barefoot Beekeeper!) but my indecision as to where the hive should be positioned left the bees with no alternative but to swarm out of my garden. This year I've learnt my lesson and have placed the hive in a good position, facing east, with nothing obstructing its entrance. Here's hoping!
